What we offer

Just in Case Medication (The Orange Bag)

What is it?

The Just in Case (JIC) service has been running since 2011. It is an orange re-sealable bag containing a small supply of medication for the rapid control of breakthrough palliative care.

Sometimes it can be difficult to get these drugs in a hurry, especially at night or the weekends, so it is very useful to have them ready – just in case.

What’s in the bag?

The Just in Case Pack contains several boxes of injectable medicines and some written information for the health care professionals looking after you. The injections supplied are for the treatment of pain, shortness of breath, restlessness, anxiety and secretions. The GP or district nurse will administer the appropriate medication should you need it. Only health care professionals may open the pack and administer the medication.

How do I Look After My Just in Case Pack?

The medicines in your pack have been prescribed for you and should not be given to anyone else. They should be kept in safe place which is cool and out of direct sunlight. Keep the pack out of reach and sight of children. The pack should not be opened by anyone other than a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or paramedic. Health professionals will keep a record of the medicines in the pack and ensure the medicines are accounted for and used appropriately. It is very important to let your surgery know where the pack is kept, in case a doctor or paramedic is called to your home in an emergency.

What should I do if the JIC pack is no longer required or expires?

It is extremely important that the JIC is returned to the pharmacy if it is no longer required. On the front of the bag we will have written its expiry date – please return it to us when this date is reached. The pack must not be given to anyone else and not disposed in household waste.
