How to find out if you are eligible

Being overweight is a common problem. More than two in three adults in the UK are overweight and around one in four adults are obese. Being obese puts you at significant risk of developing coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, stroke, or breast and bowel cancer.

The most widely used method to check if you are a healthy weight is body mass index (BMI). It is a calculation that compares your actual weight against your height. You can work out your BMI by using our BMI chart.

or use the NHS calculator here

If your BMI is 30 or above, you should be eligible to access our service. If your BMI is between 27 and 30 you still may be eligible, as long as you also have one other condition such as pre-diabetes, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, or sleep apnoea for example. We can discuss these further with you during your assessment.

Weight-Loss Treatments and how they work – the lowdown

If you follow the news at all, you’ll have already heard of some of these treatments. You could be forgiven for thinking it is the kind of thing you have seen before, yet another miracle weight-loss product. But these are pharmacologically novel medicines, and are likely to have far-reaching impact on public health. They work on types of hormone receptor found in the gut and brain called GIP receptors and/or GLP-1 receptors.

If you eat something now, your gut will produce a hormone called GLP-1, which is part of your body’s natural signals telling you that you’ve had enough. GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which in turn talks to the brain to make you feel less hungry and prevent cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer. But natural GLP-1 only stays in your system for a few minutes. By injecting into yourself an artificial copy of GLP-1, instead of lasting for a few minutes, the drug version stays in your system for a whole week. The medicines that we supply that do this are Wegovy© (semaglutide) and Mounjaro© (tirzepatide) both of which mimic GLP-1 hormone.

Another hormone called GIP regulates energy balance in brain and fat cells, enhancing the GLP-1 effect of suppressing your appetite and improving sugar control. The medication Mounjaro© (tirzepatide) mimics this hormone as well as GLP-1.

Very quickly you realise that you are not hungry any more as the drugs produce a feeling of being full and having had enough. There is an extremely high level of confidence that it produces significant amounts of sustained weight loss over a significant period of time. They have already been used in diabetes and there’s been hundreds of studies involving tens of thousands of people for obesity and other purposes.

The recommended maintenance doses are 5mg, 10mg or 15mg - the maximum dose is 15mg once weekly. If you are new to self-injecting please don’t worry, it is much easier than you think, and we will show you how to do it.

For the 10mg dose average weight loss was 21.4%, and a 16% reduction in the starting weight for those on 5mg weekly dose. This is compared to 2.4% average weight reduction using diet and excercise alone.
